The famous character, Mario of the Nintendo fame, debuted as “Jumpman” in Donkey Kong, an arcade game released in 1981 by Nintendo.

Created by Shigeru Miyamoto, an acclaimed genius of the video game industry attributed for creating some of the most acclaimed games of all times, Mario originally went by the name of Mr. Video Game, but later adopted the name Mario. The name comes from that of Mario Segale, the landlord of the Tukwila warehouse from where Nintendo of America operated at the time.

It goes that the warehouse owner, Mario Segale, walked into the warehouse one day demanding the unpaid rent. The Nintendo staff, looking for an appropriate name for their game’s protagonist, picked up Mario’s name and named Mr. Video Game as Mario.
